3 convicted of killing Memphis college student
September 29, 2012 16:27 GMT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A jury has convicted three men in the 2009 killing of a 19-year-old college student in Memphis.

University of Memphis sophomore Tederrial "TK" Hancock was shot several times in the neck as he sat in his car in a branch library parking lot.

The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/PhaDqd) reported 19-year-old Lavino Horne, 21-year-old Charles McClain and 20-year-old Leterpa Mosley were convicted Friday of first-degree murder in the case. All three automatically face a sentence of life in prison.

Prosecutor Ray Lepone had called the crime an execution. Defense attorneys had argued that the shooting wasn't planned.

Anglican church deadlocked over new leader - report

LONDON | Sun Sep 30, 2012 2:06pm BST

LONDON (Reuters) - A Church of England panel meeting in secret to choose the next Archbishop of Canterbury has failed to reach agreement on who should be the new leader of the world's 80 million Anglicans, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

After three days of talks behind closed doors in an undisclosed location, officials narrowed the field to three candidates, but will need to meet again to finish the job, the Sunday Times said, citing an unnamed senior cleric.

The choice of a replacement for Rowan Williams, who steps down in December, is critical for a church in danger of splitting over divisive issues such as gay marriage and senior women clergy, and facing a rising threat from secularism.

The Crown Nominations Commission (CNC), a church panel with 16 members whose chairman is appointed by the prime minister, had been expected to pick a preferred candidate and a second choice on Friday, a church source said last week.

The names were then due to be passed to Prime Minister David Cameron and Queen Elizabeth, supreme governor of the Church of England, before an official announcement within days, possibly on Wednesday.

In a brief statement, the church said a decision would be reached during the autumn. Officials had previously signalled that it could come as early as next week.

"The work of the Commission continues. There will be no comment on any speculation about candidates or about the CNC's deliberations," it said.

According to the Sunday Times, the panel has a three name shortlist:

* Bishop of Norwich Graham James, 61, a keen amateur actor and cricketer who said last week he would "hope and pray" someone else gets the job.

* Archbishop of York John Sentamu, 63, a Ugandan-born traditionalist who holds the second most senior post in the Church of England and writes a column for the Sun newspaper.

* Bishop of Durham Justin Welby, 56, a former oil industry executive who has been a bishop for less than a year.

The 105th Archbishop of Canterbury will take over at a painful time for a church divided by long-running debates over sexuality and senior roles for women clergy. Liberal attitudes among some clerics in Britain and the United States have infuriated conservatives in places with growing congregations, such as Nigeria.

Williams, 62, who takes up a position at Cambridge University, said in March that his successor would need the "constitution of an ox and the skin of a rhinoceros".

The head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, expressed sympathy for the winning candidate.

"They all get hammered, you know, the Archbishops of Canterbury," he told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "I have sympathy. Everybody's saying it's an impossible job."

Earn More With These Great Internet Promotion Tips! | Eric Chua ...

Website marketing may be quite difficult if your company is new and you are competing with other companies in the same line of business. A key concept in marketing on the Internet is to have multiple promotional and marking ideas working so you can choose which ones work best. Keep reading below to find out about a wide variety of tips and techniques you can implement. You won?t need to implement them all, but you will be able to select a few that may work well for you.

Allow your customers the ability to purchase items at wholesale prices if they buy in quantity. Even the wholesale prices will leave you with some profit, but you will be selling much larger quantities than before.

A 500 error page that is user-friendly is an important tool to have. This occurs when the website?s code is malfunctioning and not working properly. A boring page that gives this message may annoy your potential customer. There are ways that are better to let the users know you are informed and attempting to repair the issue.

TIP! To make your internet business a success, take the time to evaluate the competition. Look at websites of other businesses in your chosen field, and see what can be improved.

Good content is the very source of a successful Affiliate marketing strategy. Constantly analyze your content to make sure it is of the highest quality and exactly what visitors are looking for. Make sure to have someone else critique your content. A fresh outlook can provide useful insight and catch errors that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Lastly, run a program that checks your content for spelling and grammar errors, to make sure that it is absolutely perfect.

Affiliate marketing is not just exclusively on the internet. You can use the Internet to invite interested parties to conferences where you can meet them in person. This will have them become more familiar with your brand; this will make them more excited about writing about your products.

Offering a return policy is often very important when it comes to Web marketing. This will result in your customers feeling more secure and give you and your business credibility. By establishing that you will be fully responsible, customers are far more likely to put some trust in you and click that ?buy? button.

TIP! Submit your free materials and products to Internet directories that list such products for free. IF you are giving away an e-zine, give it to a lot of different directories.

To improve the level of satisfaction your customers feel with your site, add a section for frequently asked questions. This will help to answer your visitor?s questions immediately, which can solve their problem and improve satisfaction. When product benefits are spelled out in detail, it is more likely that people will buy.

Finding the right niche to market your Internet based business or website is key. You cannot sell a product or service if you have no heart in it. Niche marketing is one of the most important aspects of Internet market; it?s essentially the path that all other marketing techniques will travel down. Set your marketing with this in mind.

Think about just how good your product really is. You can have the best internet marketing around, though if what you are selling is below average, you will not see any changes to your bottom line. In order to see your sales grow, you should be sure that you are marketing a quality product, one that is superior to your competitors products.

TIP! Have special promotions to attract more visitors to your website. You can offer a dollar sale on one of your ebooks, for example.

Do not give up on things that were not initially successful. You never know when something might click and work, so keep your efforts up. The Internet regularly changes every day, and people are always coming up with new ways to utilize it. Save ideas that might not work today; instead, hold them in reserve for later on.

It is a good idea to cast yourself as an expert when it comes to the items you promote. This will help you establish credibility and loyalty if you can provide vital info and expert opinions and can meet special needs, so be sure to be able to back up your claims.

Use what you have learned to help you focus and devise an effective strategy. As said previously, spending time on setting everything up makes a huge difference. Make use of the advice you have read here to see an increase in traffic, and more importantly, in sales

TIP! Keep in mind that your website?s look and functionality are just as vital to your business as a more traditional in-store shopping experience. Regularly test your ads, links, graphics, and checkout system for problems that may inconvenience site visitors.

89% Compliance

All Critics (83) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (73) | Rotten (9)

The point of Compliance, which caused walkouts and shouting matches when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is how we are programmed to do things that go against our natural instincts as long as we believe we have the law on our side.

This is one insistent film, more evocative of human behavior than movies that take fewer risks ever could be.

Like a John Hughes movie hijacked by Roman Polanski, this troubling indie effort lays bare the sadomasochism of the American workplace.

Zobel, a second-time feature filmmaker, has put together a skillful, sympathetic but unsparing re-enactment of a small-scale atrocity, and his cast plays it out with natural, understated performances.

Zobel's masterful direction and screenplay heighten the distress of authority figures possessing unseen persuasion over naive employees, exposing a disturbing and haunting look at what some workers are willing to do in order to follow orders.

This is a well-made film, with plausible performances by all the leads, especially Ann Dowd. We feel we know people like this.

One of the most deeply disturbing movies of recent vintage.

There's the adage that life is nasty, brutish and short. It's even worse when you're half-naked and locked in a supply room with your boss.

Its skillfully constructed scene-setting montages, its fraught, gliding camera moves and attractive compositions seem judgmental, suggesting the filmmakers are superior to and more sensitive, certainly, than the characters.

'Compliance' takes an extremely unpleasant and nauseating experience for everyone involved and puts this masterful spin on it to make it not only watchable, but a really solid piece of film overall.

There's a humanity here, even for the restaurant manager. But that still doesn't make "Compliance" easy to ingest.

... a sadomasochistic mind-trip ... It has the lingering impact of a gruesome freeway pileup ? you don't want to look, but you can't help yourself.

Compliance will leave you shocked and offended, but it misses out on any opportunity to be anything outside of a dramatization.

Compliance is a difficult film to watch -- walkouts have been reported at more than one screening -- but it's also a calculating and intimate deconstruction of the greater social ills that our fast-food nation faces as a whole.

This psychodrama of ill-advised behavior may well leave you feeling dirty...for what you've watched helplessly and perhaps for what you've countenanced as an American citizen.

So long as you can tolerate the frustration it fosters, it's hard not to appreciate such intelligent provocation.

Perhaps the most disturbing movie of the year. Not a horror film, but given that we can't excuse the behavior as belonging to illegal aliens or felons eluding of the law ... maybe it's a new strain of horror after all.

For once, the title card "Based on true events" is not some cheap gimmick to lend a story importance; it is a despondent cry of shock, disbelief, and, above all, outrage.

Bravely uncomfortable and sure to inspire heated post-movie (and likely mid-movie) conversation, Compliance is haunting, positively enraging when it sinks in that this was no nightmare, but a reality.

A disturbing, fact-based look at the ways in which people can be bullied into bowing to the demands of authority figures.

We think we're more world-wise than these people and that this could never happen and then Zobel brilliantly forces us to come to terms with those judgments.

Reddit user insults Sikh woman over facial hair, response inspires apology

Facebook

On Facebook, support for the Sikh woman whose photograph was initially shared via Reddit as a way to ridicule her has has quite the opposite effect.

By Suzanne Choney

A Reddit user who posted a link to a photo of a young Sikh woman with facial hair in Reddit's "funny" thread was met with a torrent of criticism ? and an incredibly gracious response from the woman who said the photo was of her. The story has gone viral around the world, Facebook pages are springing up in support of the young woman, who so far has said little other than what she seems to have shared on Reddit.

The person who started it all identified himself ?european_douchebag? on Reddit (but now has deleted his name). He unleashed the furor when he posted the comment "I'm not sure what to make of this" with a link to a photo of the woman, shown standing in a line, checking her phone.

At first, there were some of the typically juvenile comments we've all grown to expect from such juvenile posts. But the tide turned quickly as Redditors harshly chastized "european_douchebag" ? "Don't do this. Don't take pictures of people you think look weird and post them online," posted "baumkramer." And then the woman believed to be the subject of the photo weighed in, not with barbs, but with benevolence, explaining:

Hey, guys. This is Balpreet Kaur, the girl from the picture. I actually didn't know about this until one of my friends told on facebook. If the OP wanted a picture, they could have just asked and I could have smiled :) However, I'm not embarrased or even humiliated by the attention [negative and positve] that this picture is getting because, it's who I am. Yes, I'm a baptized Sikh woman with facial hair. Yes, I realize that my gender is often confused and I look different than most women. However, baptized Sikhs believe in the sacredness of this body - it is a gift that has been given to us by the Divine Being [which is genderless, actually] and, must keep it intact as a submission to the divine will."

...By transcending societal views of beauty, I believe that I can focus more on my actions. My attitude and thoughts and actions have more value in them than my body because I recognize that this body is just going to become ash in the end, so why fuss about it? When I die, no one is going to remember what I looked like, heck, my kids will forget my voice, and slowly, all physical memory will fade away. However, my impact and legacy will remain: and, by not focusing on the physical beauty, I have time to cultivate those inner virtues and hopefully, focus my life on creating change and progress for this world in any way I can.

Kaur leveled "european_douchebag" with her words. And, to his credit, he apologized, a rarity these days on the interwebz.

"Douchebag" is a 20-year-old from Florida, according to the New York Daily News, who said admitted the the initial post was "ignorant."?

"I never even thought about how she felt or what she was going through. I really admire her faith," he told the newspaper. (He said he doesn't want his name used, and that's understandable considering the less-than-nice reaction he's received from many around the globe.)

We've reached out to Kaur for comment about the experience, and haven't heard back yet.

But more than 1,500 responses have been posted so far on Reddit, most applauding Kaur for her courage and grace.

"This is a lovely lesson in tolerance, forgiveness and getting along with it," wrote "bilva." "European douchebag thought it was harmless what he was doing, Balpreet stayed tolerant and explained ... he realized he was wrong, he went to her and apologized ... and his courage is as exemplary. To say I am sorry I was stupid, is not easy. That is why we have world wars and religious wars."

"You are amazing and a tribute to your culture," posted "byroncox." "you're absolutely gorgeous just the way you are! i applaud you."

Even those women who wax and pluck their facial hair to meet modern-day standards of beauty gave Kaur kudos.

"I wish we all could see the value of a person without looking at how much makeup they have on," wrote "MindfulSpirit." "I have been told how beautiful and put together I am .... yet none of these people know how often I have to pluck my bloody chin ... I wonder how many of these people would tell me the same thing if I let it all grow and hang out ... I hope one day I can live an enlightened life and be at peace with what I have and how my body is." Kaur, she wrote, has achieved "what many of us never will."

Do you support distribution of contraceptives in school? | Momaha ...

Students, some as young as 14, will now have access to Plan B contraception ? more commonly known as the ?morning after? pill ? without parental consent.

It?s a progressive pilot program being introduced in 13 New York City public schools.

Parents do have the right to opt out of the program at the beginning of the school year.

The program, titled CATCH (Connecting Adolescents to Comprehensive Health) is part of a wider effort to lower the rate of teen pregnancy, as some 7,000 New York residents under the age of 17 get pregnant each year.

CATCH provided Plan B contraceptives to more than 1,000 students, and gave them access to Depo-Provera, an injection form of birth control.

Not surprisingly, some have expressed fury over the program.

But a 2009 Associated Press poll reported that more parents ? 67 percent of respondents ? support distribution of contraceptives in schools.

I?m always in awe over the number of people that object to greater access to birth control by teenagers.

I understand that as a parent you would prefer your kids not be sexually active until they are 1) married or 2) mature enough to understand both the complexity and the consequences of a sexual relationship.

I?d actually prefer my kids were 30 before they become sexually active, but according to the Kinsey Institute, the average age of first intercourse by males is 16 and?17 for females.?By the time they are 18, 70 percent of females are sexually active, compared to 62 percent of males.

Girls between ages 14-17 only use condoms 58 percent?of the time and even less, as they get older.? That?s a recipe for an awful lot of teenage mothers.

It?s shocking to me that some parents are willing to insist on abstinence.? Or worse yet, are burying their heads in the sand about the probability that their own children could very well be among the almost half of the teenage population, who are having partnered sexual relationships.

It?s also shocking that people complain about who?s going to pay for Plan B, which costs between $10 to $70. Compared to the $235,000 on average, it now costs to raise a child, I?d say the state of New York is being ?fiscally responsible.?

From the New York City?Department of Health, the statistics for teenage pregnancies are as follows:

  • 7,000 girls under age 17 got pregnant last year citywide.
  • 90 percent of those pregnancies were unplanned
  • 64 percent were aborted
  • 2,200 became moms by age 17, and approximately 70 percent drop out of school

I?m almost positive the proper and widespread use of birth control would have a staggering effect on those statistics.

To me, it?s absolutely imperative to discuss sex and your wishes for abstinence with your children, if that is your position. I also think it?s irresponsible to withhold contraception from sexually active high school students because you?d prefer they didn?t have sex in the first place.

After all, isn?t it possible that open and honest communication about sexual relationships, birth control, pregnancy and its consequences could encourage your children to wait anyway?

Amy Grace is married with two children. You can read her every Friday on momaha.

Harvest Moon Meets Uranus in the Sky Saturday: How to Watch Online

The Harvest Moon will float just above the planet Uranus in the sky this weekend, and skywatchers can get a great look at the celestial show without even going outside.

The online Slooh Space Camera will webcast live observatory views of Uranus and the most famous full moon of the year Saturday (Sept. 29). One show begins at 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT), and another follows three hours later; viewers can watch the free broadcast on their computers or mobile devices at Slooh.com.

A panel of experts will be on hand during both webcasts to discuss the Harvest Moon?(the name given to the full moon that occurs closest to the start of autumn), Uranus and just what Slooh's feed is showing. These panelists include Bob Berman, contributing editor and monthly columnist at Astronomy magazine; Slooh observatory engineer Paul Cox; and Slooh president Patrick Paolucci.

Uranus, the third-largest planet in the solar system, was discovered in 1781 by astronomer William Herschel. It circles the sun at an average distance of 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion kilometers), taking 84 Earth years to complet one orbit. [Our Solar System: A Photo Tour of the Planets]

Uranus' atmosphere is dominated primarily by hydrogen and helium, with a small amount of methane that gives the "ice giant" its bluish-green tint. The planet has a ring system and 27 known moons. It's also tilted so far that it essentially orbits the sun on its side; researchers think the planet may have been knocked askew by a collision with another large body long ago.

If skywatchers wish to see Uranus through their own telescopes Saturday night, they should scan just below the moon and look for the only green "star" in the field of view, Slooh officials said.

The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the September equinox, which marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the South. Farmers have historically worked late into the evening by the light of this moon during the peak of harvest time.

Around the time of most full moons, moonrise occurs about 50 minutes later each successive night. But that figure is greatly reduced around Harvest Moon time, to 25 to 30 minutes in most parts of the United States.

?The Harvest Moon is widely misunderstood," Berman said in a statement. "Its behavior is unique, and yet its appearance is no different from any other full moon. That will be one major focus of Saturday night's live coverage."

"As for Uranus," he added, "with its singular green color and wild axial tilt, its permanent overcast never allows us to see markings of any kind, and yet its story is nothing short of fascinating."

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Electrical equipment maker AZZ said Friday that second-quarter profit soared 65 percent and it boosted its forecast of full-year earnings.

AZZ also said it will expand by buying a galvanizing-services company in Canada.

The company's stock jumped $4.86, or 14 percent, to a 52-week high of $39.62 in midday trading. Volume was already more than five times the daily average.

For the fiscal year that will end next February, the company expects earnings of between $2.25 and $2.40 per share on revenue of $574 million to $600 million. The company had forecast profit of $2.05 to $2.15 per share, adjusted for a stock split in July, and revenue between $550 million and $575 million.

The consensus among three analysts surveyed by FactSet was for full-year earnings of $2.09 per share. Analysts expected revenue of $566 million.

The new forecast includes contributions from its June acquisition of Nuclear Logistics Inc. and the deal announced Friday.

AZZ inc. said it will close the purchase of Galvcast Manufacturing Inc. of Acton, Ontario, on Oct. 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The company said net income in the quarter ended Aug. 31 was $15.9 million, or 62 cents per share, compared with $9.6 million, or 38 cents per share, a year earlier.

Who Wants To Eat Jellyfish Omelets? Dolphin Meatballs? Mouse-On-Toast? These Guys

Foodwise, we live in choosy times, mostly choosing "no thank you."

More and more of us choose not to eat meat or fish or eggs or fatty foods. We don't want anything too sugary, too fried, too raw, too strange. We tiptoe through the grocery as if it's a danger zone, hoping not to be tempted by a glazed doughnut.

That's the fashion, and I suppose it's a healthy one. Which is why you should know about two men who went wildly, dramatically, the other way. They tried to eat everything, no matter how improbable, how nasty ... well, almost everything. One lived in Rome, the other in Britain. Let's start with the Roman.

The Contender: Marcus Gavius Apicius

Marcus Gavius Apicius had a big house, a big kitchen and a sense of culinary adventure like no one else in first century Rome. He ate dangerously, creating meals so exotic, so daring, years later his recipes (or imagined versions of them) were collected in a cookbook named after him. I found some of his dishes in Patrick Faas' 2005 Around the Roman Table. What did Apicius like?

How about dolphin meatballs? Boiled parrot? Jellyfish omelets? Sows' wombs in brine? Or maybe a little stuffed mouse?

If he'd never tasted it, he wanted to. If no one else could afford it, he could. He was very rich and his options were boundless.

The Most Outrageous Ancient Dish

He is said to have created (though no one can prove this) the single most outrageous dish of ancient times, hugely popular in the first century, especially in Rome, probably for its insane expensiveness. I'm talking about Lark Tongue Pie.

A lark, you may know, is a small brown and white bird that rises early and sings just as the sun comes up. It weighs about 2 ounces and has, I presume, a very small tongue, so it's daunting to imagine how one would find enough tongues to make into a meat pie. When I Googled for a recipe, I found this response in a discussion group:

...if you show up at my door with a bucket of lark's tongues I'd probably improvise something. (Actually, I'd probably call the police.)

But not Apicius. He wanted the attention these over-the-top meals could bring. He was such a generous host that Roman statesman Seneca says Apicius burned through his 100 million sestertii fortune until he was down to a mere 10 million. When he realized he would one day have to retrench and eat modestly, he threw one last banquet and then poisoned himself.

That's the danger of any addiction. It can make you mad. But not if you're a little bit wacky in the first place. Which brings me to my other, and in this case I'd have to call him my All Time Champion Eater, a man who lived to be 80-something and systematically tasted everything he could possible swallow, tongue or chew. I am talking about an Englishman named William Buckland.

The Champ

In the early 1800s, Buckland was a biblical geologist, the first trained geologist ever at Oxford. He also was a great admirer of animals. He had an odd assortment of live ones at his home, (a hyena, a monkey, allowed to wander the halls). He also had a collection of stuffed ones. Sometimes he would bring samples to class. By one account, while teaching at Oxford, he dropped a large hyena skull onto the lap of a (terrified) student and asked, "What rules the world?" When the student didn't answer, he cried, "The stomach, sir!" It's the stomach that "rules the world. The great ones eat the less, the less the lesser still ..." And therefore, he taught, whoever dominates the world of plants and animals can (and should) eat all the others.

What rules the world? The stomach, sir!

And to demonstrate, that's what he did. He ate nearly everything. He made it a lifelong project, systematically working his way through all the animals in Noah's ark, snacking on each of them.

A couple of times, he balked. One mole repulsed him. He gagged on a bluebottle fly. But with a little butter, most things went down. Says author (and Radiolab regular) Sam Kean, Buckland ate (and offered his guests): "Crisp mice in golden batter. Panther chops. Rhino pie. Trunk of elephant. Crocodile for breakfast. Sliced porpoise head. Horse's tongue. Kangaroo ham." He also sipped dangerously.

One time he was visiting a cathedral and was shown a miracle: Apparently a beam in the roof was dripping fresh saints' blood to the floor. That, anyway, was the local legend. Buckland, "never one to turn down the opportunity to try a new flavour," says journalist Fraser Lewry, "licked the flagstones and was able to disprove the myth, immediately identifying the mystery liquid as bat urine."

How To Explain Dr. Buckland

Eww. Why did he do it? Sam Kean says Buckland spent a lot of time in the woods or away in the mountains digging and had such "limited dining options" that maybe he learned to eat pretty much anything. Or "[i]t may have been a harebrained scheme to get inside the minds of the extinct animals whose bones he dug up."

"Mostly, though," says Sam, "he just liked barbecuing ..."

That's why he's my champ. He wasn't as rich as Apicius. He wasn't as inventive. But he had a joy in him, more than a hunger; he had a mission to taste, to explore, to dare.

heart

Aaron Birk for NPR

His craziest moment may be apocryphal, but it was a story his friends told at the time. One day, he was visiting a friend who wanted to show off a special family treasure. It was sitting in a silver snuffbox. Buckland looked in, and there, cushioned in the box, was a desiccated morsel of King Louis XIV's heart. That's the Louis who built Versailles. Louis the Sun King.

"I have eaten many strange things," Buckland said to his friend, "but have never eaten the heart of a king." With that, before anybody could stop him, he popped the piece in his mouth and swallowed.

And that's why William Buckland wears my crown: Most Daring Eater Ever.

Obama urges UN to confront roots of Muslim rage

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? President Barack Obama told world leaders Tuesday that attacks on U.S. citizens in Libya "were attacks on America," and he called on them to join in confronting the root causes of the rage across the Muslim world.

"I do believe that it is the obligation of all leaders, in all countries, to speak out forcefully against violence and extremism," Obama said in a speech to the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly.

Obama also condemned the anti-Muslim video that helped spark the recent attacks, calling it "cruel and disgusting." But he strongly defended the U.S. Constitution's protection of the freedom of expression, "even views that we profoundly disagree with."

With U.S. campaign politics shadowing every word, Obama also warned that time to peacefully curb the Iranian nuclear crisis is running out.

He said there is "still time and space" to resolve the issue through diplomacy. But that time is not unlimited."

"Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations and the unraveling of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty," he said.

The foreign minister of Indonesia, the nation with world's largest Muslim population, said Obama's speech was a "clarion call" for all nations to shun intolerance and he expected Muslim nations to react positively. .

"There will be a lot of sympathy. It is an issue that galvanizes all of us," Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told The Associated Press. But he added that freedom of expression should be exercised with consideration to morality and public order.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has accused Obama of not being tough enough on Iran and of turning his back on Israel and other allies in the Middle East. Romney also has said he doesn't have much faith in peace prospects between Israelis and Palestinians.

Obama told the U.N.: "Among Israelis and Palestinians, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on the prospect of peace."

Romney in separate remarks to a global conference sponsored by former President Bill Clinton, said the attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that took the life of the U.S. ambassador and three other U.S. citizens was an act of terrorism.

Obama mentioned the slain U.S. ambassador, Christopher Stevens, several times in his address.

"Today, we must declare that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens and not by his killers. Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United nations," he said.

Unlike Romney, Obama has not specifically called the attacks in Libya and other U.S. missions terrorism.

Obama said that "at a time when anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button," the notion that governments can control the flow of information is obsolete.

"There is no speech that justifies mindless violence," such as the attack that left the four Americans dead in Libya, Obama said.

"The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech ? the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect."

Obama said that the United States "will be relentless in tracking down the killers and bringing them to justice." And he said he appreciated "that in recent days, the leaders of other countries in the region ? including Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen ? have taken steps to secure our diplomatic facilities and called for calm. So have religious authorities around the globe."

The president said there was no way the United States would have just banned the offensive video that helped trigger the attacks, as some leaders in the Muslim world have advocated.

"Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs," Obama said.

"Moreover, as president of our country and commander in chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so," he said, drawing laughter from his audience.

Running through Obama's speech was an overall theme that leaders of the Muslim world should also stand up for freer speech and oppose those who vent their anger with violence.

"There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon or destroy a school in Tunis or cause death and destruction in Pakistan," Obama said.

"More broadly, the events of the last two weeks speak to the need for all of us to address honestly the tensions between the West and an Arab world moving to democracy," he said.

But, he added, "Just as we cannot solve every problem in the world, the United States has not, and will not, seek to dictate the outcome of democratic transitions abroad, and we do not expect other nations to agree with us on every issue."

"Nor do we assume that the violence of the past weeks, or the hateful speech by some individuals, represents the views of the overwhelming majority of Muslims ? any more than the views of the people who produced this video represent those of Americans."

Turning to the rising violence in Syria, Obama told the U.N. delegates, "The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings. We must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence."

"Together, we must stand with those Syrians who believe in a different vision ? a Syria that is united and inclusive, where children don't need to fear their own government and all Syrians have a say in how they are governed? Sunnis and Alawites, Kurds and Christians."

Obama also noted some hopeful developments in the world in the nearly four years he's been in office.

"The war in Iraq is over, and our troops have come home. We have begun a transition in Afghanistan, and America and our allies will end our war on schedule in 2014," he said. "Al-Qaida has been weakened, and Osama bin Laden is no more. Nations have come together to lock down nuclear materials, and America and Russia are reducing our arsenals."

Summing up, Obama said, "true democracy ? real freedom ? is hard work."

Declaring it is time to leave "the call of violence and the politics of division behind," Obama said: "We cannot afford to get it wrong. We must seize this moment. And America stands ready to work with all who are willing to embrace a better future."

Advantages of Franchising ? headline news

The primary benefit of franchising is risk minimization.  Starting a new business is very risky.  Numerous studies have shown that over 90% fail within three years.  The main reason of such failure is due to the fact that owners have to go through the bedazzling learning curve of operating a specific type of business.  However, with franchising, such curve is substantially reduced.

Another reason to purchase a franchise is that a franchise investment can be extensively researched prior to making any significant expenditure.  Existing franchisees provide a wealth of information about the business so that beginner franchisees can try the business they purchase to make sure that it is a good fit for them.

Franchisers market a defined, proven business scheme of operation, offering a service or product that has sold successfully.  An independent business is based on both an untested idea and operation.

The experience of a franchiser?s management team boosts the potential for success.  This experience is usually conveyed through formal instruction and on-the-job training.

Franchisees can usually purchase lower-cost goods and supplied through the franchiser, resulting from the group buying power of all the franchises.

Established franchisers provide national or regional name recognition.  While this might not be true with a new franchiser, the benefit of starting with one is the potential to develop as its business and name recognition grow.

Franchising offers a uniform method of operation, so that consumers receive the same quality, efficiently and cost-effectively.  A uniform system brings numerous advantages of mass purchasing power, customer loyalty, brand identification, capitalizing on the proven business format.

A franchiser also offers management assistance, including accounting procedures, as well as personnel and facility management.  A person with experience in these areas might not be familiar with how to implement them in a new business.  The franchiser helps the franchisee triumph over this lack of experience.

Franchisers assist franchisees create a business plan.  Numerous elements of the plan are standard operating procedures made by the franchisor.  The complicated part of a new business is the start-up, since even experienced managers do not have the utmost knowledge in setting up a new business.

One of the greatest benefits of franchising is marketing.  The franchiser can organize and pay for the development of professional advertising and promotion campaigns.  The national or regional marketing done by the franchiser benefits all franchisees.  Additionally, the franchiser can offer advice on how to create effective marketing programs for local area through a cooperative marketing fund, to which the franchisees add a percentage of their gross income.

It is possible to obtain assistance in financing a new franchise through the franchiser.  The franchiser can make arrangements with a lending corporation to loan money to a franchisee.  The franchisee must accept responsibility for the loan.  The franchiser?s involvement often increases the likelihood that the loan will be approved.

A franchiser also offers training for the franchisee.  This is especially significant if the concept is complicated.  The best training merges classroom or one-on-one training done at the franchiser?s facility with field training done at the franchisee?s site of business.

PFT: Ref nightmare NFL feared has happened

PFT: Even before Monday night?s Packers-Seahawks game, the officiating lockout had reached a tipping point. Casual, Super-Bowl-only fans were buzzing about the brouhaha, and the NFL?s ?remain calm . . . all is well . . . ALL IS WELL!? mantra was regarded as laughable. But the NFL had been lucky. No game had been decided by a bad call in a decisive moment. So much for that.

Language use is simpler than previously thought, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? For more than 50 years, language scientists have assumed that sentence structure is fundamentally hierarchical, made up of small parts in turn made of smaller parts, like Russian nesting dolls.

A new Cornell study suggests language use is simpler than they had thought.

Co-author Morten Christiansen, Cornell professor of psychology and co-director of the Cornell Cognitive Science Program, and his colleagues say that language is actually based on simpler sequential structures, like clusters of beads on a string.

"What we're suggesting is that the language system deals with words by grouping them into little clumps that are then associated with meaning," he said.

Sentences are made up of such word clumps, or "constructions," that are understood when arranged in a particular order. For example, the word sequence "bread and butter" might be represented as a construction, whereas the reverse sequence of words ("butter and bread") would likely not.

The sequence concept has simplicity on its side; language is naturally sequential, given the temporal cues that help us understand and be understood as we use language. Moreover, the hierarchy concept doesn't take into account the many other cues that help convey meaning, such as the setting and knowing what was said before and the speaker's intention.

The researchers drew on evidence in language-related fields from psycholinguistics to cognitive neuroscience. For example, research in evolutionary biology indicates that humans acquired language (and animals did not) because we have evolved abilities in a number of areas, such as being able to correctly guess others' intentions and learn a large number of sounds that we then relate to meaning to create words. In contrast, the hierarchy concept suggests humans have language thanks only to highly specialized "hardware" in the brain, which neuroscientists have yet to find.

Research in cognitive neuroscience shows that the same set of brain regions seem to be involved in both sequential learning and language, suggesting that language is processed sequentially. And several recent psycholinguistic studies have shown that how well adults and children perform on a sequence learning task strongly predicts how well they can process the deluge of words that come at us in rapid succession when we're listening to someone speak. "The better you are at dealing with sequences, the easier it is for you to comprehend language," Christiansen said.

The study by Christiansen and his colleagues has important implications for several language-related fields. From an evolutionary perspective, it could help close what has been seen as a large gap between the communications systems of humans and other nonhuman primates. "This research allows us a better understanding of our place in nature, in that we can tie our language ability, our communication abilities, more closely to what we can see in other species. It could have a big impact in terms of allowing us to think in more humble terms about the origin of language in humans," Christiansen said.

The research could also affect natural language processing, the area of computer science that deals with human language, by encouraging scholars to focus on sequential structure when trying to create humanlike speech and other types of language processing, Christiansen said. He pointed out that machines already successfully perform such tasks as translation and speech recognition thanks to algorithms based on sequential structures.

The study, "How hierarchical is language use?" was published Sept. 12 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. The research was funded by the European Union, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and the Binational Science Foundation.

CCCA planning cross-country road trip during Lincoln Highway's ...

While known to most automotive enthusiasts as the man behind the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500, Carl Fisher?s greater contribution to automotive history, now largely forgotten, came a couple of years later when he built the country?s first coast-to-coast highway, the Lincoln Highway, which the Classic Car Club of America plans to traverse for its 2013 Re-Discover America CARavan.

Fisher, an automobile racer, dealer, and parts supplier, actually switched over from bicycles to automobiles around the turn of the century, as did many automotive pioneers. No doubt through his involvement with bicycles he realized the importance of building and improving roads not just within cities but all across the country, the motivation behind the Good Roads Movement. That goal became increasingly more important with the introduction of the automobile, which would require an extensive road network for Americans to adopt it ? what good is owning a car if you have nowhere to drive it? ? so not long after the inaugural Indianapolis 500, Fisher turned his attention toward building a transcontinental highway.

Basing the New York-to-San Francisco route partly on existing roads and historic trails, the Lincoln Highway Association began its publicity campaign ? which included lobbying local and state governments and even raising funds to build sections of the route itself ? in 1913. That publicity then led to a proliferation of highways across the country, all formally codified by the federal government in 1926 under the U.S. numbered highways system. Its largest impact, however, was on a young Dwight Eisenhower, who traveled the Lincoln Highway in 1919 and realized the importance of a federal highway network, leading to the introduction of the national Interstate system in 1956.

Today, much of the Lincoln Highway has been paved over or rerouted, but it will serve as a general template for the route that the CCCA will take from New York to San Francisco, traveling through a dozen states over the three-week period from May 4 to May 26. Along the way, the tour will visit museums and collections of note and include a number of scenic routes. For more information, visit ClassicCarClub.org.

If you don?t have a certified Full Classic, two other tours will celebrate the Lincoln Highway?s centennial next year. The Lincoln Highway Association has planned its tour for June 21-30, with two contingents leaving from New York City and San Francisco and meeting in the middle at Kearney, Nebraska. Then, shortly after that tour wraps up, another group open to any pre-1979 vehicle plans to traverse the highway from New York City to San Francisco from July 1-26.

First Responders Show Community What They're Made Of

Story Created: Sep 22, 2012 at 10:23 PM MDT

Story Updated: Sep 22, 2012 at 10:23 PM MDT

RIFLE, Colo. On Saturday folks from around the region headed to Fire Station 1 in Rifle for their annual open house. The event gives the community and opportunity to see up close what it's like to be a first responder.

As the saying goes, if you're doing something you love, you'll never work a day in your life. Rifle firefighters couldn't agree more.

Lieutenant Leif Sackett said, "There's nothing like someone coming up to you when your in the store shopping for food on duty, and giving you a hug and telling you thank-you. So to me, that's why we all do it."

Mike Morgan, fire chief of the Rifle Protection District and the Colorado River Fire Rescue, said, "A lot of them will tell us, you know, when I grow up I want to be a firefighter. and we always joke with them and say well you've got to make a choice, because if you grow up you can't be a firefighter, because firefighters never grow up!"

First responders showed the community what they do everyday and why they do it.

Flight paramedic, Robert Weisbaum, said, "There was a two-year-old boy who drowned and he was basically pronounced dead. We flew him out to Denver and he is now 100 percent back to normal. It was quite memorable."

"They realize that we are just real people and we're here because we support our community and we love what we do and we love the people that we work for and serve," said Morgan.

They disguised their efforts to educate the kids by making the lessons fun.

Morgan said, "It's really a good opportunity for the public to come interact and see what the public safety groups are working on and how we work together and what our capabilities are."

A fire safety house was at the event. It travels around the Western Slope teaching kids what to do if there's a fire in their house.

"It exposes them to what it looks life. They are our future, whether or not this is something they want to pursue," Weisbaum said.

The open demonstration gives the community a realistic picture of what it's like to be a first responder, opening many onlookers eyes.

Twelve-year-old Bryanna TenEyck, said, "I'd say thank-you because they're a lot braver than I am! I mean I wouldn't be able to do this stuff."

Fire officials say this is the fifth year for the event and that it grows each year.

These heroes say they do what they do every day because of the people, and the people want their heroes to know they're thankful.
