Xiaomi Box launches in a three-city trial on March 19th at a lower price

Xiaomi Box hands-on

The Xiaomi Box has had an arduous road to travel before it could go on sale: Chinese regulations reportedly kept it in limbo until local broadcaster iCNTV stepped in this January to get the ball rolling once again. The end is in sight now that a limited trial is set to start on March 19th. Changsha, Hangzhou and Shanghai will get about 10,000 total units of the Android media hub, whose price is dropping from the originally chosen ?399 ($64) to an extra-frugal ?299 ($48). The price slash could well make the set-top box that much more alluring, especially when it's still poised to give both Android and iOS users some media sharing love. Could you please hurry up your release plans, Xiaomi?

El Camino College Union : Tuberculosis: Learning the difference ...

Recent cases of possible tuberculosis is an ongoing concern that students find troubling.

Tuberculosis also known as TB is a contagious disease which can be spread, if not treated properly, through the air by sneezing or coughing. Symptoms of tuberculous include, weight loss, night sweats, fevers, persistent coughing and coughing up blood. The disease may effect anyone of any age and some carries may not even show any blatant symptoms.

This disease is easily transmitted through, coughing, sneezing and laughing, according to an article on latimes.com. The article further states that when tuberculosis is untreated that the disease can cause death.

In the same article it reveals that a possible tuberculosis case has been found at Cal Poly Pomona. A student taking multiple classes at Cal Poly Pomona may have become infected with tuberculosis and has withdrawn from school and is currently undergoing treatment. The university notified more than 400 students, staff and faculty that may have been in prolonged contact with the carrier.

In light of what is going on at other campuses, the chances of possible tuberculosis cases occurring here at EC is plausible. However, it is important for students to know that there is a significant difference between tuberculosis the disease and tuberculosis the infection. Having the tuberculosis infection unlike the disease doesn?t mean that you can actually spread it.

?Generally the way you find out you have TB is that you get a TB test,?Debbie Conover, health center coordinator, said. ?If you get a TB test and the test positive it doesn?t mean that you have active TB, it means that you have the TB infection it doesn?t mean that you have to disease, a positive TB result does not show that you have TB disease or that you can infect others.?

Though the tuberculosis infection can not be spread, concerned students can come into the Student Health Center where a tuberculosis test is offered for a fee.

?What happens here when a student has a TB test that is positive they get sent to the public health department or their private providers for a chest x-ray, if it shows that you have the TB disease they will treat you with medication over the course of a period,? Conover said.

With any type of infection or disease that is known to the public, growing concern of the disease and how to prevent from being infected or spreading it to others develops.

?It?s important for people to know how prevent something like that, I think thats why a lot of people spread diseases, they?re just not aware,? Kylie Richmond, 22, psychology major, said.

Students seem to be slightly aware of tuberculosis and are being cautious of their surroundings.

?I?ve heard of it, it?s gross when people cough around me to begin with. It makes me kind of paranoid now like thinking I could be in class and catch something, you know?? Angela Willis, 19, English major, said.

Though being properly tested and taking medication if needed will help prevent the spread of tuberculosis there are other ways to help decrease your chances of being infected. In the case of students who may be at risk for the disease the proper medical procedures will occur.

?The best way to prevent it is good hygiene, excellent hand washing, its endemic in areas that are heavily populated close living corridors, it is primarily a respiratory illness, airborne,? Deborah Herzik, health center nurse practitioner, said. ?Start by screening the people at risk with a TB skin test if they have a positive a TB skin test then you do a chest x-ray, if the chest x-ray is normal, then if its a young person they would be offered medication to prevent them from having an active case of TB.?

While the concern of having or catching tuberculosis is justifiable, it?s important to understand that having proper knowledge of any diseases is the best way to ensure health safety.

IRS unclaimed refunds: The IRS owes you $1 billion (some of you, anyway)

Did you claim your refund? The IRS reports that $917 million in unclaimed refunds from 2009 will be theirs to keep as of April 15. If your paycheck withheld more than you owed, there's no penalty for filing your taxes late ? but after three years, the feds get to keep your unclaimed refund.

By Stephen Ohlemacher,?Associated Press / March 14, 2013

Taxpayers search through 2009 tax forms at the Illinois Department of Revenue in Springfield, Ill., April 15, 2010. The IRS has almost $1 billion in unclaimed refunds that will be theirs to keep, if delinquent filers don't submit their 2009 tax forms by April 15, 2013.

The IRS has $917 million in unclaimed tax refunds from 2009, and time is running out to claim them. If you didn't bother filing a federal tax return for 2009, that money might have your name on it.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The unclaimed refunds are owed to nearly 1 million people who failed to file returns for 2009. If that describes you, you have to file your 2009 returns by April 15 to claim your refund.

The IRS says that when taxpayers don't file returns, they have three years to claim refunds. After that, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.

You aren't penalized for filing a late return, as long as it qualifies for a refund. But your refund may be delayed if you also failed to file returns for 2010 and 2011.

The government can also withhold tax refunds to settle unpaid federal and state taxes, as well as unpaid child support and past due student loans.

People in every state and the District of Columbia are owed refunds, including 100,700 people in California and 86,000 people in Texas, the?IRS?said. Most of the refunds exceed $500.

Some people may not have filed tax returns because they made too little money and weren't required to file, the?IRS?said. However, if they had federal income taxes withheld from their pay, those people may be entitled to refunds.

Also, many low- and middle-income people who didn't file returns may be missing out on the Earned Income Tax Credit. In 2009, a married couple with three or more children could earn up to $48,279 and qualify for the credit. Income thresholds are lower for couples and single filers with fewer children.

2 Vitamins you may be deficient in and need to supplement

Vitamins are required in minimum amount each day for the proper functioning of the body and general well-being. Apart from providing the groundwork for the body to grow and develop, they?re also responsible for functions such as immunity, metabolism and digestion. The U.S National Library of Medicine states that a balanced diet consisting of variety of fruits and vegetables is recommended for fulfilling daily vitamin needs.

supplements

People who can?t meet their daily vitamin needs from foods alone may require dietary supplements. For example, if someone isn?t getting the minimum amount of vitamin D each day, he/she can opt for a multi-vitamin supplement or a single vitamin supplement like?Pureformulas Vitamin D3.

Nutritionists, scientists and doctors keep on researching more about vitamins. Here are some new theories that have surfaced in recent times;

New Research?

1.?Vitamin D lowers risk of dying in older adults

Ellen Smit from Oregon State University, US, conducted a study last year; 4300 older adults above 60 years of age were part of the study and they were divided in different groups based on their Vitamin D levels. The group with low Vitamin D levels were more likely to be frail. The study revealed that older adults whose Vitamin D levels were lower had a 30 percent higher chance of facing death earlier compared to adults with high Vitamin D levels.

2.?Vitamin D supplements may help in reducing cardiovascular disease

James Vacek carried out a research with Kanas-based researchers, in which they noted Vitamin D deficiency in the group of people they examined was associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, while Vitamin D supplements were associated with 61 percent increase in chances of survival in the study population. The study concluded that vitamin D supplements may help people to live longer.

.?Vitamin B3 may be able to fight off antibiotic-resistant staph infections

Dr. Gorge Liu from Cedars-Sinai Medical College in Los Angeles California conducted study with his colleagues. They found Vitamin B3, when taken in doses that were far higher than a dose would be for a normal diet, increased the strength of immune cells to eliminate bacteria by 1,000 times in just a few hours. The effect was conducted on human blood samples. The result of the study indicated that nicotinamide or Vitamin B3 may have the ability to kill staph infections (which are antibiotic resistant) that have killed thousands worldwide. Supplements can aid in higher Vitamin B3 dosage.

Conclusion

The studies show the importance of vitamins and supplementing in case of deficiency. Everyone should try to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables for meeting their daily vitamin needs, and complement the diet with supplements to avoid any deficiency. Doing so will promote a healthy lifestyle.

Retired Argentine cardinal has heart attack

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican says a retired Argentine cardinal who lives in Rome suffered a heart attack on the day his compatriot Pope Francis was elected.

Francis himself informed cardinals about 90-year-old Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia's heart attack as he greeted them Friday at the Vatican. It was not clear whether Mejia was taken ill before or after the news of the papal election.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi told journalists Friday that Mejia was in stable condition. Because of his age, Mejia was not among the voting cardinals, who must be younger than 80 to elect a pontiff.

Family Home and Life: Starting New Traditions & a Blessing Blanket

Do you have family traditions? We do too. I try to be careful not to over load the family with following too many of them because family?traditions?can become chores rather than blessings. When we were expecting our first grand child, I wanted to have a gown and blanket for each child to use on?their?Dedication Day at church; like a Christening gown. A new tradition to follow.

At?the?time of our first grand?child's?arrival, I was working full time and there was no way I could fit the sewing of a gown and matching blanket into my schedule. So I turned to a loving friend that sews beautifully and asked her to make one; she did and the?craftsmanship?is fabulous! It is my hope that it will be passed down and used for generations to come.

I wanted this gown to look like a family heirloom too, so I choose an off white silk. Yes it was expensive and worth every penny! The fabric does wrinkle, and my mother would fuss at me for photographing it without ironing first. I kinda like the wrinkling though.?Look at the sweet?embroidery?on the yolk.?

There is a matching bonnet.

And there are folded pleats at the hem of the gown where I can one day?embroider the?initials?and birthdays of each grand child that uses it.?(when I am old and the kids are grown :)??

The blanket comes in handy for the boys if mom and dad are afraid the gown is too fussy to for them to wear.

One day when I was cleaning the closet I took out the gown and blanket. I was thinking how sad that something so beautiful was stuck in the closet after one use per child. It might not be used for years until the next generation arrives. (That is if I don't have any more grand kids. I think I will though, one or two ;)

Then I had an idea; the blanket could be re-used to start a new tradition! A Blessing Blanket that is wrapped around the shoulders of a birthday child and a blessing spoke over them by their family and friends!?Now we have a new tradition to follow in our family, one that is very cherished and looked forward to by each child.?

Cousin giving the birthday girl a blessing; I love it! The birthday girl held on to some of her new toys while she was blessed :)?

?Mom blessing her sweet birthday girl.

What is a blessing? Here is a link, and here is another, if you would like to read their definitions of a blessing. We speak words of encouragement, good things we wanted to happen for them. We ask that God direct and protect their lives. We tell the birthday child what we liked best about them and why they are special to us. Sometimes some one will say something funny for a blessing, and that was ok; we all laughed! Some times we were very serious and shed a few tears. It is a wonderful way to draw those heart strings tighter, wound around to gather us all together in deeper love for each other.?

Gee, I would love to have that blanket around my shoulders and be blessed by my family too; maybe I should extended it to the adults as well! What are your most cherished family traditions?

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? The next phase of an investigation into a veterans charity accused of being a front for a $300 million gambling operation will focus on the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on lobbying and campaigns donations, authorities said.

Nearly 60 people were charged in the probe so far and Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll stepped down after being questioned by investigators. While authorities wouldn't talk specifics Wednesday, records showed the Florida-based charity Allied Veterans of the World and another company involved in the alleged fraud have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on lobbying and political campaigns in Florida.

Allied Veterans ran nearly 50 Internet parlors with computerized slot machine-style games and gave little to veterans, instead lavishing millions on charity leaders, spending it on boats, beachfront condos and Maseratis, Ferraris and Porsches, authorities said.

From 2007 to early 2012, investigators said they found evidence of nearly $6 million in what appeared to be charitable donations ? only about 2 percent of the nearly $300 million made from gambling during that period.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi called the alleged scam "callous" and "despicable" and said it "insults every American who ever wore a military uniform."

Carroll was not charged with any wrongdoing. A public relations firm she once co-owned, 3 N& JC, did work for Allied Veterans. A Navy veteran who served in the Gulf War, Carroll also appeared in a TV ad in 2011 promoting the organization's work on behalf of veterans and their families.

Carroll said in a statement that neither she nor the public relations firm was targeted in the probe, and she stepped down so that her ties to the organization would not be a distraction for Republican Gov. Rick Scott's administration.

"I have and will continue to fully cooperate with any investigation," Carroll said.

The investigation involved 57 arrest warrants and 54 search warrants issued in Florida and five other states: South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Nevada and Pennsylvania. At least 49 people were arrested; several defendants were to make their first appearance Thursday in Seminole County Court.

Bondi said that when charges are formally filed next week, they will include racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering and possession of slot machines.

Allied Veterans' 49 parlors in Florida were raided and shut down. Authorities said they seized about 300 bank accounts containing $64.7 million, as well as sports cars and other property.

A telephone number listed for Allied Veterans was disconnected. Emails to an address on the group's website were not returned. The address Allied listed as its headquarters appeared abandoned, the long, gray cinder-block building bare inside.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey said the arrests were only the first wave. The second part of the investigation will focus on political contributions Allied Veterans made and gambling centers not operated by the charity.

"Large sums of money have been spent on lobbying efforts and donations to political campaigns," Bailey said.

Records showed Allied Veterans paid at least $490,000 to Florida lobbyists between 2009 and 2012. International Internet Technologies, the software company that investigators said created the products used at the gambling centers, spent more than $1.2 million on Florida lobbyists during that same period. All of International Internet Technologies' Florida lobbyists resigned Wednesday.

Florida campaign records also showed International Internet Technologies has poured in nearly $500,000 into campaign accounts since 2009, including more than $230,000 to the Republican Party of Florida and $60,000 to the Florida Democratic Party.

Donations have gone to political committees affiliated with legislators and the direct campaign accounts of dozens of legislators, including current Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford.

Weatherford received a check for $500 in 2011, although he voted last year to ban the types of storefront operations.

Weatherford said Wednesday he has not talked with companies affiliated with the industry in months since he is opposed to them. He also said the Republican Party should consider returning any money it accepted from International Internet Technologies.

A Democratic Party spokeswoman said it was conducting an "up and down review of all contributions received."

Kelly Mathis, a Jacksonville lawyer who investigators say was at the center of Allied Veterans' operations, has given $5,145 since 2008, including nearly $2,000 to the Republican Party of Florida in late 2010 and the rest to state legislators. His law firm contributed another $5,260 to legislators and judges.

A woman who answered the phone at Mathis' law firm said no one was available to talk about his arrest.

Conflicting legislation last year called for regulating the Internet parlors or banning them outright. An impasse resulted in nothing getting passed, yet leaders were already talking about pushing ahead to quickly outlaw them.

"These machines and these Internet cafes need to be closed down," Weatherford said. "We believe they are acting illegally. The House is not waiting very long to move forward."

How deep Allied Veterans' political influence is has yet to be fully understood. But even Bondi, the attorney general, admitted to having her photo taken with one of the leaders, Jerry Bass.

"I met him. I actually believe I took a picture with him while this investigation was pending," Bondi said at a news conference announcing the arrests. "But what am I going to say, 'Sorry, I can't take a picture with you. You're under investigation?'"

Bass has been arrested and no one returned a telephone call to his home.

Germany Set To Eliminate Borrowing by 2015

There are reports that German Government is looking significantly to decrease borrowing in 2015. The Government aims to cut new borrowing to just 6.4 billion Euros in 2014, and eliminate borrowing in 2015 completely, a finance ministry official said on Monday.

Follow up:

The figures must be formerly approved by Chancellor Angela Merkel?s cabinet on Wednesday. Germany plans to have a budget surplus of 5.1 billion Euros in 2016 and 9.3 billion Euros in 2017.

The latest report shows just how strong the German finances are, while most of the European economies struggle.

European leaders scheduled to meet on March 14th in Brussels for a 2-day summit. The policy makers will try to draw-up a rescue package for Cypress before it falls into bankruptcy. While Cypress problems can be solved temporarily, there are new clouds on the horizon. EUR/USD dropped significantly after Italian elections, and there is no timeline to resolve the political deadlock in that country. In addition to that, the latest numbers from France show unemployment rates at 13-year high levels, and virtually non-existent growth prospects.

EUR/USD is trading at 1.3027. We mentioned in previous reports that EUR/USD may have a snap back rally, and it remains to be seen if this rally will materialize. We believe that any upward movement will be capped at 1.31836 ? 1.32029 levels, where we will be looking to enter shorts or add to short positions. Ultimately we believe EUR/USD will continue to go lower, and there are no signs for our outlook to change. The 1.29656 level serves as support, unless it is decisively broken, 1.2890 is our next level to the downside, and 1.2838 after that.

Hashtags On Facebook Would Open Up Exploration And Discovery Way More Than Graph Search

8304836772_c5a52c5328_zThe hashtag (#), which is a hallmark of Twitter’s userbase wanting to categorize content, is rumored to become a part of Facebook’s Graph Search. The company is tinkering around with the notion, but not much is known about how far along the social network is with it.? While the hashtag isn’t a concept owned entirely by Twitter, the company has helped to make them popular with mainstream users. The most important usage of the hashtag hasn’t been for branding though, its been to bring uncategorized information together into a discoverable and scannable way. Our sources tell us that it’s too early to know if the feature will end up making it into Facebook’s user experience or whether it will hit the chopping block. But with the company’s focus on slicing up information into feeds with its News Feed makeover, the incorporation of linked hashtags makes sense. Currently, Graph Search doesn’t crawl all of our posts, so it would seem like the hashtag feature would have to wait until that gets rolled out. However, Facebook has seen the power of the hashtag firsthand; it’s a wildly popular behavior on Instagram. With a completely different demographic hashtagging their photos, Facebook is able to see how much extra engagement and traction is stirred up for photos based on bored users tapping the highlighted words. As I’ve been using Graph Search, I find that typing into an open box isn’t something that comes naturally on a social network. I would much prefer queues like links or hashtags to drive my exploration. This is a phenomenon that is prevalent on sites like Wikipedia. You can get lost for hours clicking around from one article to the next based on the terms that are linked. In that way, links are the glue that make a massive social network feel smaller, which is what Twitter has experienced since properly incorporating hashtags. If Facebook were to adopt linked hashtags, of course even more commercials during your favorite TV shows would be plastered with #things to “engage” you in conversation. But mostly, the hashtag is there to engage you in wasting tons of time with tappable and clickable discovery. Oh, and Twitter would benefit from this adoption greatly, so don’t start singing the blues for them.

Dot Earth Blog: State Department Again Sees No Environmental Barriers to Keystone Pipeline

The State Department?s revised supplemental environmental impact statement on the proposed 1,700-mile?Keystone XL?pipeline is out, and offers very little that Secretary of State John Kerry or President Obama might use as a reason to reject the plan.

You can best gauge the reaction of various factions on Twitter using the?#noKXL?and #keystoneXL tags.

The voluminous report?includes this blunt conclusion on the inconsequential nature of the pipeline if one?s interest is in reducing extraction and use of oil from the Alberta deposits, or anywhere else for that matter:?

Based on information and analysis about the North American crude transport infrastructure (particularly the proven ability of rail to transport substantial quantities of crude oil profitably under current market conditions, and to add capacity relatively rapidly) and the global crude oil market, the draft Supplemental EIS concludes that approval or denial of the proposed Project is unlikely to have a substantial impact on the rate of development in the oil sands, or on the amount of heavy crude oil refined in the Gulf Coast area.

Here?s the core section from John Broder?s news article in The Times:

The lengthy?document?draws no conclusions on whether the pipeline is in the United States?s economic and energy interests, a determination to be made later this year by President Obama. But it will certainly add a new element to the already robust climate change and energy debate around the $7 billion proposed project.

The study will help guide the president?s decision, but it does not make the politics any easier.

Environmental?advocates?and landowners along the route have mounted noisy protests against the project, including a large demonstration in Washington last month, and view Keystone as a test of Mr. Obama?s seriousness about addressing global warming.

The president faces equally strong?pressure?from industry, the Canadian government, many Republicans and some Democrats in Congress, local officials and union leaders, who say the project will create thousands of jobs and provide a secure source of oil that will replace crude from Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and other potentially hostile suppliers.

HTC One now up for pre-order on Rogers

HTC One

Like so many carriers before it, Rogers in Canada has announced that it is now accepting pre-orders and reservations for the upcoming HTC One. New customers can get their pre-order in online to guarantee they'll have one when the device launches, and existing customers can "reserve" one for the same system -- although there doesn't seem to be any indication of whether or not existing customers are prioritized over new ones. The pricing will be the same regardless -- Rogers is charging $149.99 with a 3 year contract, which is a standard term in Canada. If you pre-order through Rogers before March 22, you're also entered into a contest to win a new Sharp HDTV with an HTC Media Link accessory.

Rogers is also reminding customers that HTC is offering $100 off the purchase of an HTC One if you trade in your old HTC device. If you're interested in picking one of these up as soon as they're available, hit up the source links below.

US factories grow at fastest pace since June 2011

(AP) ? U.S. manufacturers expanded in February at the fastest pace since June 2011, buoyed by increases in new orders and production. The third straight month of growth suggests factories may help the economy this year after slumping through most of 2012.

The Institute for Supply Management says its index of factory activity rose last month to 54.2, up from January's reading of 53.1. A reading above 50 indicates expansion. The ISM is a trade group of purchasing managers.

A measure of new orders rose to the highest level since April 2011. Factories added jobs, the report said, but at a slower pace than the previous month.

how to spot and avoid credit repair scams

As mentioned in an earlier blog post, next week is National Consumer Protection Week, a campaign that encourages consumers to take advantage of their rights and make better-informed decisions. In the spirit of NCPW, we here at the Credit Karma Blog will be writing a series of blog posts with handy tips on how you can protect yourself.

A few days ago, we covered several ways to keep your money safe. Today, we?re going to show you how to spot and avoid credit repair scams, which are unfortunately more prevalent than we?d like.

First off, let?s cover the basics.

What is a Credit Repair Scam?

Credit repair scams are programs that prey on those who are desperate for better credit by offering to fix and wipe credit reports clean of negative marks. They often do so by promising a ?new credit identity?. However, beware of these scams. There is never a ?quick fix? for repairing your credit.

Choosing credit repair assistance that turns out to be a scam will only worsen your financial situation. It?ll cost you money you don?t have, it?ll waste your time, and it won?t fix your credit.

How Can I Spot a Credit Repair Scam?

Credit repair scams are usually pretty easy to spot, once you know what to look for. Watch out for any of these red flags:

  1. They promise to remove all negative marks from your credit report. No one can legally remove accurate information from your credit report, even if a credit repair agency claims that you (or they) can. Accurate negative remarks will fall off your report after seven to ten years, but you can?t do anything to speed up the process.
  2. They insist to be paid before the services have been performed. The Credit Repair Organizations Act states that a credit repair company cannot ask you for payment until they?ve fulfilled their promise of service. Never give a credit repair service your money until they?ve accomplished what they?ve promised to do.
  3. They solicit you through email. Many unsolicited emails (whether they have to do with credit repair services or not) are fraudulent, so don?t take your chances. Just throw them away or mark them as spam.
  4. They tell you to create a new identity by applying for credit using a number other than your Social Security Number. Some organizations suggest doing this so you can create a new, clean credit file. However, this is not only illegal, but also impossible.
  5. They tell you not to contact any of the credit bureaus directly. You are entitled to receive copies of your credit report and are also entitled to dispute any errors yourself. Beware of anyone who tells you otherwise.
  6. They give you a vague contract to sign. Before you sign any contracts, read through the terms and conditions thoroughly and make sure the contract contains detailed information, like the name and business address of the organization, the amount you are being charged, the date by which the services will be performed, and how to cancel the contract. If it doesn?t contain that information, or if they ask you to sign a contract before giving you a copy to review, run far, far away!

How can I Avoid a Credit Repair Scam?

Simply put, the best way to avoid credit repair scams is to fix your credit yourself. There is legally nothing a credit repair company can do to improve your credit that you can?t do yourself.

When investigating your credit yourself, make sure you know your rights.

You are entitled to receive one free credit report every 12 months from each of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Take advantage of this ability and pull your reports from AnnualCreditReport.com, the only government-approved site to get your reports for free.

In addition, you?re entitled to a report in the following situations:

  • If a company denies your application for credit, insurance, a loan, or employment. Contact the credit bureau that provided your report to the company within 60 days of receiving notice of the action.
  • If you?re unemployed and plan to seek employment within 60 days, if you?re on welfare, or if your report contains inaccuracies due to fraud, such as identity theft.

Once you?ve received your reports, review them carefully and dispute any errors.

Bottom Line: Not all credit repair agencies are scams, but be sure to do your research with the BBB, FTC, and your state attorney general before using a company?s credit repair services. Or, to be even safer, try repairing your credit yourself.

If you?ve already been a victim of a fraudulent credit repair service, report the abuse, especially if you?ve lost money due to credit repair fraud. Contact your local consumer affairs office or your state Attorney General to report the abuse.

Plight of the American bumblebee: Disappearing?

(AP) ? It's not just honey bees that are in trouble. The fuzzy American bumblebee seems to be disappearing in the Midwest.

Two new studies in Thursday's journal Science conclude that wild bees, like the American bumblebee, are increasingly important in pollinating flowers and crops that provide us with food. And, at least in the Midwest, they seem to be dwindling in an alarming manner, possibly from disease and parasites.

Wild bees are difficult to track so scientists have had a hard time knowing what's happening to them. But because of one man in a small town in Illinois in the 1890s, researchers now have a better clue.

Naturalist Charles Robertson went out daily in a horse-drawn buggy and meticulously collected and categorized insects in Carlinville in southern Illinois.

More than a century later, Laura Burkle of Montana State University went back to see what changed. Burkle and her colleagues reported that they could only find half the species of wild bees that Robertson found ? 54 of 109 types.

"That's a significant decline. It's a scary decline," Burkle said Thursday.

And what's most noticeable is the near absence of one particular species, the yellow-and-black American bumblebee. There are 4,000 species of wild bees in America and 49 of them are bumblebees. In the Midwest, the most common bee has been Bombus pensylvanicus, known as the American bumblebee. It only stings defensively, experts say.

But in 447 hours of searching, Burkle's team found only one American bumblebee, a queen.

That fits with a study that University of Illinois entomologist Sydney Cameron did two years ago when she found a dramatic reduction in the number and range of the American bumblebee.

"It was the most dominant bumblebee in the Midwest," Cameron said, saying it now has pretty much disappeared from much of its northern range. Overall, its range has shrunk by about 23 percent, although it is still strong in Texas and the West, she said.

"People call them the big fuzzies," Cameron said. "They're phenomenal animals. They can fly in the snow."

Her research found four species of bumblebees in trouble: the American bumblebee, the rusty-patched bumblebee, the western bumblebee and the yellow-banded bumblebee.

A separate Science study by a European team showed that wild bees in general have a larger role in pollinating plants than the honey bees that are trucked in to do the job professionally.

Those domesticated bees are already in trouble with record high prices for bees to pollinate California almond trees, said David Inouye at the University of Maryland.

Scientists suspect a combination of disease and parasites for the dwindling of both wild and domesticated bees.

3-D printing using old milk jugs

Mar. 1, 2013 ? Suppose you could replace "Made in China" with "Made in my garage." Suppose also that every time you polished off a jug of two percent, you would be stocking up on raw material to make anything from a cell phone case and golf tees to a toy castle and a garlic press.

And, you could give yourself a gold medal for being a bona fide, recycling, polar-bear-saving rock star.

Michigan Technological University's Joshua Pearce is working on it. His main tool is open-source 3D printing, which he uses to save thousands of dollars by making everything from his lab equipment to his safety razor.

Using free software downloaded from sites like Thingiverse, which now holds over 54,000 open-source designs, 3D printers make all manner of objects by laying down thin layers of plastic in a specific pattern. While high-end printers can cost many thousands of dollars, simpler open-source units run between $250 and $500 -- and can be used to make parts for other 3D printers, driving the cost down ever further.

"One impediment to even more widespread use has been the cost of filament," says Pearce, an associate professor of materials science and engineering and electrical and computer engineering. Though vastly less expensive than most manufactured products, the plastic filament that 3D printers transform into useful objects isn't free.

Milk jugs, on the other hand, are a costly nuisance, either to recycle or to bury in a landfill. But if you could turn them into plastic filament, Pearce reasoned, you could solve the disposal problem and drive down the cost of 3D printing even more.

So Pearce and his research group decided to make their own recycling unit, or RecycleBot. They cut the labels off milk jugs, washed the plastic, and shredded it. Then they ran it through a homemade device that melts and extrudes it into a long, spaghetti-like string of plastic. Their process is open-source and free for everyone to make and use at Thingiverse.com.

The process isn't perfect. Milk jugs are made of high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, which is not ideal for 3D printing. "HDPE is a little more challenging to print with," Pearce says. But the disadvantages are not overwhelming. His group made its own climate-controlled chamber using a dorm-room refrigerator and an off-the-shelf teddy-bear humidifier and had good results. With more experimentation, the results would be even better, he says. "3D printing is where computers were in the 1970s."

The group determined that making their own filament in an insulated RecycleBot used about 1/10th the energy needed to acquire commercial 3D filament. They also calculated that they used less energy than it would take to recycle milk jugs conventionally.

RecycleBots and 3D printers have all kinds of applications, but they would be especially useful in areas where shopping malls are few and far between, Pearce believes. "Three billion people live in rural areas that have lots of plastic junk," he says. "They could use it to make useful consumer goods for themselves. Or imagine people living by a landfill in Brazil, recycling plastic and making useful products or even just 'fair trade filament' to sell. Twenty milk jugs gets you about 1 kilogram of plastic filament, which currently costs $30 to $50 online."

Pearce's research is described in depth in two articles: "Distributed Recycling of Waste Polymer into RepRap Feedstock,"coauthored with Christian Baechler and Matthew DeVuono of Queen's University and published in the March issue of Rapid Prototyping ; and "Distributed Recycling of Post-Consumer Plastic Waste in Rural Areas," coauthored by Michigan Tech's Jerry Anzalone (CEE) and students Megan Kreiger (MSE), Meredith Mulder (MSE) and Alexandra Glover (MSE), which will appear in the Proceedings of the Materials Research Society.
