Tim Cook v. Steve Jobs: On bringing back manufacturing and other major differences

File photo

Tim Cook, left, has branched out from the policies of Apple founder and former CEO Steve Jobs.

When Tim Cook announced Apple would bring manufacturing jobs back from overseas for Mac products, he took a big departure from the steps of his predecessor.

In February 2011, Steve Jobs joined several tech executives for dinner with President Barack Obama, who asked the Apple co-founder what it would take for him to bring jobs back from overseas.

Jobs? answer, according to a dinner guest? Those jobs aren?t coming back.

Cook clearly didn?t get that memo.

Here are a few other departures Cook has taken since stepping into the CEO role:

? HQ costs

Jobs thought big - and expensive - with Apple?s planned headquarters in Cupertino, known as the ?spaceship.? But it looks like Cook is pulling back on some of the expenses, like shrinking the number of costly underground parking spots and expanding parking (more cheaply) above ground.

? Scott Forstall

Forstall was the youngest senior executive under Jobs and one of the closest to the iconic leader. Cook fired him in October amid a big shakeup at the tech giant, showing Forstall and another exec the door while promoting several others.

? Dividends

Jobs famously didn?t pay dividends from the time he returned to the helm at the company in 1996. But five months after sliding into the CEO spot, Cook announced the company would begin paying shareholders.

? Philanthropy

Jobs ended Apple?s corporate philanthropic program in 1997 and kept any of his own philanthropic activity private. Under Cook, the company started a corporate matching program for charitable contributions. (Although one nonprofit?s director of corporate relations told me it?s still hard to get a foot in that door.)
