PUEBLO ? Colorado State University-Pueblo continued its positive growth trajectory and achieved yet another on-campus population record as part of its Fall 2011 census numbers compiled following the 20th day of classes.
Fall 2011 census numbers reflected an increase of two percent for overall enrolled headcount, from 5145 in Fall 2010 to 5246 (+101) in Fall 2011. Total full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment, upon which funding is based, increased 2.2 percent from 4444 to 4438 (+94). The FTE increase means more students are attending full time and taking full-time course loads.
The University reported its largest on-campus population in history with 958 students living in four residence halls (Crestone, Culebra, Greenhorn, and Belmont).? That number represents a 4.7 percent overall increase from last fall; 2.3 percent increase in new students and 11 percent increase in continuing students. The University recently took over management of the Walking Stick Apartments on campus, which are near capacity with just a handful of vacancies remaining.
The University?s budget received good news with higher enrollment increases from non-resident students. Enrollment increased more for non-residents who pay a higher tuition rate (+42, or +7%) than for residents (+63 or +1%). However, enrollment for international students declined, primarily due to a decrease in international Master of Business Administration students.

?Even in the face of State budget reductions, CSU-Pueblo has been able to respond to student needs by promoting an affordable education at one of Colorado?s fastest growing universities,? said Interim Provost Peter Dorhout. ?Our Commitment to Colorado for resident students opens the doors for folks who thought they couldn?t afford it.?
Enrollment numbers varied by student level as well.? Although the number of overall freshmen was behind about four percent, the number of new freshmen increased five percent. The sophomore class increased one percent, with the greatest increases seen in the junior (+159 or +18%) and senior classes (+63 or +6%).? Enrollment of graduate students was down 65 students, or nearly 20 percent.
University officials were pleased with the ever more diverse student population, including an Hispanic enrollment of 27.8 percent, as well as the increase in retention numbers. First-time full-time freshmen retention for Fall 2010 to Fall 2011 was 65.5% (including 63.1% for Hispanic students) compared to 63.6% from Fall 2009 to Fall 2010.
?I believe that our attention to the academic and student living environments is paying dividends.? A new Honors program, investment in student and faculty scholarly activity, and a focus on retaining students once they come to CSU-Pueblo through academic support and living-learning communities enhance our growing reputation in Colorado higher education,? Dorhout said. ? CSU-Pueblo should be the destination university for the region.?
