Mobile phone gaming is bigger than ever, and GameStop is ready to grab a piece of the action
With?iPhone games like?Angry Birds turning into massive, multi-million dollar franchises, it's clear that?app-based gaming is here to stay. More traditional portable game systems like the PSP and Nintendo DS are doing their best to stay in the game, but it may be hard to compete with iPhone and?iPad games often costing as little as a dollar. Video game retail chain GameStop clearly sees the momentum shifting as well. To make sure they don't miss out on their piece of the pie, the company will soon be offering?iOS devices like the iPhone and iPod touch for sale in many of its over 6,000 stores.
To help get a head start, GameStop will soon be accepting iOS hardware as trade-ins for in-store credit. No official word on what kind of pricing tier the stores will utilize, and calls placed to several GameStops were met with conflicting details as to whether all GameStop locations ? or select stores only ? will accept the new trades. One store representative that I spoke with said that the company's computers have had iPods and iPhones listed as inventory items for at least the last 6 months.
Reselling used items is a major boon for GameStop, which regularly holds promotions and takes trade-ins on used games for every console currently on store shelves. The company has posted?record profits in recent years, with much of its revenue coming from the resale of secondhand games and systems. Reselling iOS devices, as well as offering brand new iPhones and iPads, should make GameStop an even bigger player in the mobile gaming space, though just what kind of deals the company will offer remains to be seen.
