A Look at the New White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew (ContributorNetwork)

President Barack Obama named budget director Jack Lew as the new White House chief of staff today. ABC News reports Lew will take reins from outgoing chief William Daley, who offered his resignation last week.

Here's a look at the new chief of staff.

* Jacob "Jack" Lew, 56, began his political career as chief domestic policy adviser to former House Speaker Tip O'Neal. He then served as assistant director of the House Steering and Policy Committee.

* According to the OMB website, Lew served as special assistant to the president under the Clinton administration. He principally coordinated health care reform legislation and the AmeriCorps programs on behalf of the administration. He then served as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. Clinton selected him as director in 1998.

* Under President Obama, Lew originally served as deputy secretary of state for resource management -- the State Department's chief operating officer. The New York Times reported Secretary of State Hillary Clinton regretted his departure from the State Department.

* In July 2010, the White House announced Lew would be appointed as director of OMB, the executive branch's main accounting and budget arm and the largest department within the executive office of the president. Lew was unanimously confirmed by the Senate for the position.

* According to National Journal, Lew is a soft-spoken academic who will likely lead the president's budget and economic proposals through the back doors of Congress. One of the first projects he is expected to handle will be to complete the one year extension of the payroll tax cut signed in December.

* The Washington Post reported Dailey will remain at the White House until the end of the month to assist the president in preparing for the annual State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress. Lew is expected to take over as chief of staff at the end of the month.
