Mayor terms Montague school ?ghetto?

MONTAGUE ? The old high school here partially used by as many as 500 area students for a shop class is nothing but a ?ghetto?, says Mayor Richard Collins, who says government should honour a pledge to expand the intermediate facility next door.

?The old high school is an old, sick building and no student should have to be educated in such a mess,?? he said.

Collins joined a potential site developer for a tour of the building recently and said he was disgusted by what he saw. He said the 50-year-old former Montague High school, now closed and replaced last year with a new facility on the Wood Islands hill, is an accident waiting to happen. He said the building is awful inside.

?The developer took one quick look around and said ?let me outta here?.?

A former trustee with the Eastern School Board before it was disbanded last year, Collins said the budget for the new $20-million regional school included a $1.2 million funding slice for a small expansion to the local intermediate school (grade 7-9). However, that money was used up and never went to the intermediate to help with a promised expansion to the music room and the construction of an industrial arts room.

Students must walk to the old high school around boarded up windows and enter a back entrance because walking through the school has become a hazard. A student-led petition is now circulating and organizers want a meeting with Premier Robert Ghiz to rectify the situation.

?It?s my biggest disappointment that the government has ignored this issue,?? said Collins, who insists he was promised by the Liberal government in 2008 the expansion would be ready the fall of 2009.

?That promise is now three years old,? he said.

Collins said the government already owns the land next to the intermediate school to allow for the planned expansion. The property was occupied by a small motel now demolished.

About 300 students at the intermediate school must leave their school, don boots and coats, walk across a town street and around the old high school to enter one section of the building still used for industrial arts. Another 200 hundred from feeder schools are bused to the same place for their classes on a weekly basis.

?I can?t believe that the minister has confirmed there is no money for a 2012 expansion either,?? said the mayor. ?The building is unsafe and nothing but a ghetto.?

Collins said staff, parents, and students have every justification to launch a petition now posted in at least 20 local business operations.
