Isaac flood insurance claim deadline extended until end of January ...

Louisiana property owners whose homes or other structures were damaged during Hurricane Isaac have been given an additional 60 days to file flood insurance claims, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Wednesday.

However, individuals, renters and business owners who did not have flood insurance or who were underinsured have only until Nov. 29 to register with FEMA for other forms of disaster assistance.

The National Flood Insurance Program usually requires claims to be reported within 60 days of the date of a loss. Two extensions have already been granted because access to homes and other buildings insured by federal flood insurance program was delayed due to infrastructure damage or high floodwaters.

The latest extension means insurance policy holders will have 150 days from the date of their loss to submit a claim, which is known as "proof of loss." Hurricane Isaac made landfall in Louisiana on Aug. 28, then again the next day, with heavy rainfall and flooding occurring for several days before and after.

Thus, the date of loss will vary for individual property owners.

"We encourage people who have not filed a flood insurance claim to take advantage of this filing extension to document their losses," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Gerard M. Stolar.

The federal insurance program has paid out more than $370 million on 12,864 Louisiana claims since Isaac made landfall.

Other FEMA disaster-related programs already have supplied $365 million in assistance in Louisiana. This includes more than $116 million in grants from FEMA's Individual Assistance program, more than $135 million in low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, and more than $113 million in reimbursements to the state and local governments from FEMA's Public Assistance program.

Storm-affected homeowners, renters and business owners with uninsured or underinsured damage in the following disaster-designated parishes should register by the deadline, FEMA officials say: Allen, Ascension, Assumption, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Morehouse, Orleans, Plaquemines, Pointe Coupee, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John, St. Martin, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, Washington, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana.

Louisiana residents can register for non-insurance aid through the FEMA Individual Assistance program, or check the status of the registrations on the web at www.disasterassistance.gov, via smartphone at m.fema.gov, or by calling 1.800.621.FEMA, or by TTY at 1.800.462.7585. Individuals using 711 Relay or Video Relay Services can call 1.800.621.3362.

The FEMA phone lines are available from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Non-Engish speakers can receive assistance by pressing Option 3 when prompted.
