Schools to receive cheaper Microsoft products

10/01/2013

A new Memorandum of Understanding which was recently signed by the Department for Education will allow schools across the country to receive discounts on Microsoft's academic software, including programs such as Word and Excel.

The new licensing deal with the software giant could result in a total saving of ?10 million over the next two to three years, according to V3.co.uk, while it will also give schools the freedom to use software from other companies with their Microsoft appliances.

Meanwhile, a charity in Crosby has been paying for students to enrol in the Merseyside Third Sector Technology Centre?s digital skills programme, named 3tc, which aims to introduce adults to basic ICT functions such as how to browse the web and how to use social media networks.

The course allows participants to gain an entry level three qualification from the British Computer Society, reports the Crosby Herald.

The government is also reportedly considering a new ICT curriculum for schools, which is set to be announced next September and is likely to place less emphasis on the use of Microsoft products.
